Basic Membership Qualifications

Manufacturers: Any person, firm or corporation engaged in the manufacturing or wholesale distribution of accessibility equipment is eligible to become an active Manufacturer member of the Association with the full voting privileges. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must have an established place of business.
  2. Must subscribe to the principles, and in practice, apply the rules promulgated in ANSI A17.1 and CSA B355 Safety Code and other codes or ordinances having applicability.
  3. Must subscribe to the purposes of the Association, and be willing to accept committee assignments and other work to further its ends,
  4. The officers who apply on behalf of the firm or corporate must be actively engaged in its business.

Associates: Any person, firm or corporation with an interest in the accessibility equipment industry to become an Associate member. This includes equipment users, building owners, code writers, regulatory authorities, accessibility contractors, industry associates, government and others. Associate members do not have voting privileges.

Accessibility Equipment: The term "Accessibility Equipment" includes the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of vertical, inclined and horizontal conveying systems which are used primarily to provide access and/or egress for physically disabled persons in public and residential environments, commonly known as platform lifts, stairlifts, wheelchair lifts, access elevators, residence elevators, stairway chairlifts and similar products.

Membership Dues

Manufacturer Member:

  • Initiation Fee (due with Membership Application): $500
  • Annual Dues: Based upon sales volume of accessibility equipment made during the preceding full calendar year (see excerpt below from the Bylaws of the Association, defining "Accessibility Equipment"). This figure establishes your dues category, which in turn establishes your membership dues factor. Dues therefore vary according to company size. Annual dues are calculated by multiplying your dues factor by a fixed dollar amount approved by the Board. The fiscal dollar amount has been fixed at $200. This dues structure was approved in a previous letter ballot. A dues invoice will be issued upon receipt of your category confirmation.
  • Please indicate the category for your Company based on your previous fiscal year's sales. All sales figures should be in US dollars and are for North American sales only of Accessibility equipment.

    Article II - Definition

    The term "Accessibility Equipment" includes the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of vertical, inclined and horizontal conveying systems which are used primarily to provide access and/or egress for physically disabled persons in public and residential environments, commonly known as platform lifts, stairlifts, wheelchair lifts, access elevators, residence elevators, stairway chairlifts, limited use/limited application elevators and similar products.

    Associate Member:

  • Initiation Fee (due with Membership Application): $200
  • Annual Dues (pro-rated by quarter, based upon data of membership approval: $200
  • Note: Dues payments to AEMA are deductible as ordinary and necessary business expense for income tax purposes; However, dues' payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.

    Membership Approval: Membership in AEMA is contingent upon a majority vote of the Board of Directors.
