Updates to Jurisdictional Authoritis section of AEMA web site complete

Updates to local authorities having jurisdiction has just been updated and will be uploaded to the AEMA web site shortly. A complete survey of all the jurisdictional authorities was completed at the end of August. Although changes were not substantial, there were a number of personnel changes, as well as contact numbers and e-mail address.
This section of the website provides information on contact names; phone, fax and e-mail addresses of contact persons, the adopted codes and standards in that particular jurisdiction; whether or not licensing is required for companies and Technicians. The database includes information on US and Canadian jurisdictional authorities. Access to the data base is restricted to paid up members only, both Manufacturer and Associate members. If you haven't received your password and ID, please contact Dave Balmer at dbalmer@aema.com.

AEMA Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place in conjunction with the NAEC Convention

The AGM will be held on September 30, 2004 in the Baltimore Convention Center (BCC) in Room 304. The AGM will start at 2:00pm and will last about an hour. We urge all members to attend. Any member who would like an item to be attached to the agenda for discussion, please forward to dbalmer@aema.com. Suggested items can be projects for your association to address in the future. At the AGM, we will have elections for three positions on the Board of Directors. Any member of the association can stand for election to the Board of Directors. The current slate of directors and officers is as follows:

President and Director
Stephen Whittenburg ThyssenKrupp Access

Secretary
Chris Cromwell Bedco Elevator

Treasurer
Greg Harmon, National Whee-O-Vator

Directors
Rob DeRooy Concord Elevator
Tom McIsaac Stannah Stairlifts
Terry Pope Acme Home Elevator
Don Birdsall Vertical Mobility
Bob Buonara Vertechs Industries

The bylaws require that six directors be elected for a two-year term. Three directors are elected each year for a two-year term, which provides for continuity of knowledge on the board. This year, the terms for Tom McIssac, Robert Buonara and Terry Pope expire. These three positions are open for nominations. Nominations can be accepted from any member. If you wish to nominate a member to the board, please complete the attached nomination form and forward to Dave Balmer. It is quite permissible to nominate yourself as well, if you are anxious to serve!

These positions will be voted on at the AGM. At the end of the AGM, the new board will convene in Executive Session to elect the 2005 slate of officers and appoint committee chairs. This usually takes about half-an- hour to one hour. At the completion of the Executive Session, we move to room 305 for our annual Social Gathering. From 4:00pm to 6:00pm, members and guests enjoy hot hors d'oeuvres and beverages/bar drinks. This gathering is a favorite venue to get together with other industry members in a relaxed social atmosphere. All members and their guests are welcome to attend. Send an e-mail to dbalmer@aema.com if you have any questions.

Brief synopsis on vertical transportation in the new ADAAG as published in Access Currents

This synopsis is on the intro page of the newly published ADAAG (Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.) The entire document is available for a free download at www.access-board.gov. There is new information concerning accessibility in private homes as well, which impacts our residential elevator manufacturing members. This information will be posted shortly be on the AEMA website along with a discussion paper. Provisions for elevators recognize a greater range of designs and dimensions for standard cars and include new technical criteria for other types of elevators: destination-oriented, limited-use/ limited-application, and residential. Provisions for platform lifts have been updated and reference a new industry standard (ASME A18.1).
